I was looking at this drive:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820231220

On Newegg right now it is $140. But I can get it on Craig's list for $90, which seems like an incredible deal. I really want to do it, but I just wanted to ask everyone what their opinions are first. I read a lot of the bad reviews that it got, and they scare me a little. But there were a lot more positive reviews. And I know there are a lot of tweaks you can do to improve performance that the people that gave bad reviews might not know about.

Also, I will be coming from a 74gb raptor. So I'm not sure I'll see a big gain from this. Someone gave a review that came from the raptor too, and they said it was a really big difference. I'll still be keeping the raptor for games or something.

So anyway at $90, do you think this drive is worth it?

Also, should I keep the pagefile on my raptor? I've heard that this ssd doesn't do very well with writes.

The cheap SSDs all seem to use a low quality JMicron controller that will cause "stuttering", where the drive pauses for up to 1 or 2 seconds when having to erase data pages while writing. There's an excellent explanation of this here: http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=3531.

There is a new mid-range batch of SSDs coming out that use a controller by Indilinx, which would appear to be a better solution, short of going with the expensive SSDs using a Samsung controller...
