i have a intel G31 Motherboard when i transfer my files from my computer to the portable drive it shows the transfer speed of 25MB/S But when i transfer the same file on same portable Drivefrom my friend using nvidia chipset motherboare it shows transfer rate of 38MB/S.

I Think this is basicly the motherboard proablem.

Using the same connection system between external HDD and computer? The slower rate looks typical for a USB2 connection. But an eSATA or a Firewire 400 (aka IEEE 1394a) connection could easily give you the higher speed.

There's also a potential influence of the drivers in use on each machine. For a USB connection system, there are also questions of whether the external HDD is plugged into a mobo socket directly to the USB controller, or through an external USB hub. And how busy is your machine and its other USB devices?
