Connection is lost during hotsync

I suspect someone out there has already run into this problem:
Software: Maximizer 8 and Maximizer Link on WinXP connected Zire 31,
using all latest OS.
Problem: Two-way sync between handheld and desktop dies on the desktop
during synchronization process (it just disappears from the screen
during the sync), and the icon on the system tray disappears too.
However, one way sync/dump from the desktop to handheld works just
fine. Subsequent two-way dies as described.
Background info: I used to use a Palm IIIxe with WinXP and same exact
behaviour happened. I finally figured upgrading both hardware and
software and using latest OS in all would probably fix the problem.
Wrong! Therefore, I know it is not the hardware or software, but some
setting or file in my system. For additional info, the Maximizer
database was backed up and installed on the new desktop, therefore I
suspect some setting or file issue was carried over on the backup.
Additional info: I have already renamed the backup folder for the
palm, and done both hard and soft resets on the handheld, both to no
avail.
