I've been a long-time user of Palm hand-helds but am pretty
unimpressed with the latest models. I'd like a handheld that has WiFi
built in. The only Palm that does that is the Tungsten C and I don't
care for the keyboard. I could get a Sony Clie and stay with the Palm
OS but the reviews for most of them are a little shaky. The upshot is
that I'm looking at switching to a Dell Axim and using the Microsoft
OS.
I'm wondering if anyone else has made this switch and how they found
it. Thanks for any insights.

Talk about ironic! Check out this headline:
http://palm.pdablast.com/articles/ [...] ie-in.html
"Sony Corp. said on Tuesday it will stop developing and selling new PDAs in
the United States this year, exiting a declining market and striking a blow
to PalmSource Inc. whose software powers the devices.
"The move will likely shrink the number of new handhelds that need the Palm
operating system made by PalmSource, which counts Sony as its second biggest
licensee after palmOne Inc. As a result, PalmSource shares fell 14 percent
on Tuesday."
I have a Visor Prism, and have been kicking around what to get next, as the
Prism's memory is full, and applications seem to need more speed all the
time. I had been leaning toward a Clie TJ37, but this latest news makes me
want to look again at Dell's Axims. In two or three years, I wonder if
there will be much in the way of Palm software.
I checked the newsgroup to see if there were any messages re the Sony
decision, and I couldn't help but respond to this one.

Indeed. I haven't seen any indication that there is _any_ Pocket PC
software that will interoperate in the environment I work in. It
appears as though while it's possible to set up a PPP connection that
allows one to access files on a Pocket PC via FTP, there is a severe
paucity of third party applications that will actually interoperate
with those that run on PPC/WinCE.
I'd have to give up on being able to sync pretty much _any_ of the
things I currently sync between desktop and palmtop.

In fairness, the PPC does a better job filling my jacket pocket, I have
to take my wallet out to fit it in there. I normally carry a Palm, but
I have a PPC too.
I use the PPC to show me my Calendar and Tasks list on my desk so I
don't have to look at Outlook, and in that respect, ActiveSync is
definitely better then HotSync. Beyond that, I can't really find much
use for the thing, it's too big to be portable, and too slow to be
useful, it doesn't handle multiple folders in Outlook, at the alarms
rarely work if I turn the PPC off.

My Sony Clie UX50 has built in Wi-fi and I use it daily to receive email at
hot-spots. It's a great little machine and I mean little, very portable.
I've used it for web-browsing as well over wi-fi and GPRS with no problems.

PDA market is decline not matter it is a PalmOS or PocketPC device.
I think the market trend tend to move toward to Mobile phone with PDA
features or smartphone.
It is just the fact that people like to carry one gadget instead of two.

I never have tried any PPC- I must admit.
BUT:
Can PPC do this?
Run stable for more than 30days?
Open any program in less than a second?
Require a lower hardware and therefore run longer on a charge?
Have a resolution of minimum 320x320 or like mine of 320x480?
I know of the new killer PDA with 640x480 but how much of the currently
available software supports this resolution?
Tons of software which is better in user interface, uses less 'pixels' for
itself and therefore displays more information?
Well then I maybe would swap my NX70 for a PPC.

Poor you.
The Garmin isn't as good an in-car solution as the Pocket PC alternatives.
Oh, and the price I saw was £586 with only 32MB and batteries that last for
two hours.

I've used a succession of Palm based devices since my Palm Pilot Pro, but
there is no getting away from the fact that currently, if you want to use
your PDA for in-car satellite navigation, the Pocket PC is king.
I challenge you to find a more elegant and cost-effective solution than the
current iPAQ HP2210 with satellite receiver, car kit & Tomtom3 on a Palm
based unit.
I am a Palm user, but I'm not blind to the truth.
Or is this a case of "Gee, it's Palm, so it must be better?"

Please define why the Garmin isn't as good as a PPC alternative? The Garmin
is an all-in-one solution with a higher resolution and larger screen than
most PPC units. By the way, it has an SD slot so 32M of memory isn't an
issue and since it's an in-car solution you can use the car cradle that
provides power and charges the battery at the same time eliminating that as
an issue.

My T3 uses Bluetooth to connect to my PC and share the broadband internet
connection. Setup was minimal and straight forward (the hard part was
setting up Windows to share the internet connection).

I managed to get one new for my mate for a lot less than this off eBay and
he's quite happy with it. As for the batteries, only if you're using it with
the satellite and the version we bought came with a 12V car adaptor.

Ok I dont want to diss you but I have got to reply to the bit about "I
guess I'm just used to Windows". PPC or Smartphone is not in the
slightest bit like windows. The only similarity is the backdrop. I
develop apps for PPC Palm and soon Smartphone. There is no similarity.
If you want something like windows you could just as easily use a palm
and zlauncher. PS it is nothing like windows either but as like it as
PPC. :-)

Oh, alright then.
It loses the signal too often in a moving vehicle.
It costs £580, plus £55 for the car kit 'cos the battery life isn't too good
without it.

How about £300 for the Tomtom bit, plus another £250 for a Tungsten T3?
That's £550, and not cost effective against the HP2210 bundles. That's not
more cost effective.

In a quick search of UK 2210 pricing I found that according to Pricewatch UK
there is only about 20£ difference between the low price on a 2210 and a T3.
Hardly a significant difference. The TomTom package costs the same for
either PPC or Palm.
I am not saying that Palms are the best at everything but they certainly
compete very well with the 2210 and TomTom package. In this case I would
give the edge to Palm due to the larger and higher resolution screen.
