I recently bought a WD 1TB SATA drive and I am trying to figure out a good partition structure and what to put in them. I would like a decently fast setup. I was thinking of two OSs a flavor of Linux and then Vista 64. With Vista I want to have a backup partition for the OS so that I can restore the OS partition once in awhile. I also want a partition for data and one for apps. as far as Linux goes it will cut my HD into pieces like usual.

this being said, what the the freak do I do with the rest of the drive?? One TB is HUGE(hopefully not showing my age)

God, that's complicated.

two OSs a flavor of Linux and then Vista 64. With Vista I want to have a backup
partition for the OS

OK, so that's 3 so far.

so that I can restore the OS partition once in awhile. I also want a partition for data and one for apps.

for a total of 5 ? Jeez, i would find that confusing.

Linus - 100 GB
Vista 64 - 100 GB - for OS & aps.
V64 backup - 300 GB
V64 data - 300 GB
unformatted - 100 GB

for a total of 900 GB, it will format to 900 GB & change.

just to get the conversation rolling.

which Linux aps ?

I was thinking of getting some disk imaging software and sucking a base installation of Vista over to the Vista backup so that it would be easier to restore the system. As far as Linux apps go I am really not sure, whatever catches my eye :)

Not if you have a wife.. they find hidden files.. and also know what it is if it's password protected..

Go with movies or game isos and stream porn..
