evga 8600 (no signal!)

Forum Graphics & Displays : Graphics Cards evga 8600 (no signal!)

Word :    Username :

Built a new rig this weekend. It consists of a intel dual core, evga nforce 680i mobo, evga 8600gtx video card, 2gb memory, 600wattps, etc, etc.

I bought a NEC brand monitor "accusync lcd22wmgx" from fry's. Video card has dual dvi ports and monitor has dvi port. Problem is the monitor just gives me a "no signal" box on it's display. Computer boots up, no problems that "I" can see, fans running, power button/light on, etc.

My Uncle gave me the mobo,processor,heatsink/fan and video card. I know they work, he was using them. BUT, something is not working for me. I can't figure out the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can't even load windows on it, i can't look at the bios on the new harddrive, what gives? HELP!

Bump!

Sorry, it's an 8800 gtx, not an 8600.

Thanks,

Well, I think it could be a few different things, and none of them are real easy to determine. First off, make sure everything is seated properly, all cables are plugged in (especially the power to the video card). If that doesn't remedy it...

Easiest and cheapest to check would be trying to connect your monitor to another PC and seeing if it works. If it doesn't work on another PC, try using a different video cable, to see if that is bad.

If you get signal on the other PC, and assuming the other PC has PCI-e, try putting that card in that PC. You don't even need to install the drivers. Just boot it up and see if you get signal to get in the Bios. If you do, you can rule out a bad card. If the same thing occurs, you can almost certainly assume that the video card is bad.

If the video card works in the other PC (if you are able to do that) the next link in the chain that could be bad is the mobo. If the mobo is bad, obviously you need a new one.

I know you said it was all working, but in the move from one PC to another, you could have sent a static shock to something (video card, mobo, CPU or even the ram). It doesn't take much to kill a mobo, so I am leaning towards that being the culprit, and my next guess would be a dead video card.

Another thing you could try, is getting another PCI-e video card to test in your PC. Even if you get something cheap from a local store that has a generous return policy... just install it and if you get signal, then you know it is the video card and not the mobo.

BTW, what kind of PSU do you have? It is possible that it isn't strong enough for your 8800 GTX. Though, that is fairly unlikely, as you would still probably be able to get to the bios.

Good luck

Basketcase thanks for your reply. I should also let you know that this is only my second build, so it could be error on my part. But, the mobo manual was very easy to follow. I've been reading (can't remember where, i think on this forum) that folks were/are having trouble getting there 8800 cards to handshake w/ there lcd's. Something about old firmware or drivers? It was suggested to me (not on here) to get a dvi to vga cable and then i would get a signal. After i get a signal, set the bios correctly? Ever heard of doing that? After "correcting" the settings, then try the dvi to dvi cable.

See, i'm learning so please be forgiving with my vernacular and knowledge of what i'm doing.

I'm going to reseat the processor/heatsink/fan. Check all the power supply cables and what else? I've moved the video card in and out of both pci slots, plugged the monitor into both dvi ports on the card in each pci slot, no signal!

I guess if i get the dvi to vga cable, i will test my old lcd.

My power supply is a 600watt sli certified, BUT it is a affordable "no name" brand from tigerdirect (it was on sale). I'm getting a 1000watt on thursday, another gift from my well to do uncle.

Any more help will be appreciated. Thanks for your response basketcase.

I don't know for sure about the 8800 - LCD handshaking problem, though anything is possible. It sounds like an easy thing to check.

Your 600 watt PSU should be enough to get you into the bios, so I don't think that is a problem.

test another graphic card, tested another power supply, swapped memory, changed motherboard....still no signal. Ps3 works fine on the new monitor, it's not the monitor. reseated the cpu...no signal. What next?

Maybe it's a bad cpu?

What are your full specs???

600 watt power supply ( i also now have a 1000 watt, tested it also )
intel dual core 6600
2 gb memory
nforce 680 sli mobo ( i now have two of these )
evga 8800gtx graphics card
*** tested a older pny pci graphics card, no signal from it either!
cd/dvd burner
750 seagate hdd (brand new, no os on it yet)
antec case (new)
thermaltake heatsink/fan
New, NEC 22" monitor

Also hooked up my old lcd monitor using the vga ports (no signal)

That's about it. Sure could use some help here.

I'm thinking about buying another processor and testing it.
