I just bought a refurbished Gateway FX7024 and my processor fan keeps blowing every 10 seconds - is this normal? It's pretty loud and annoying. Any help answeing these 2 questions would be appreciated:

1) Is this normal?
2) Would buying another fan/heatsink help?

Thanks.

If you have a q6600 like google says you do, get a bigger fan or a better heatsink - theres a dozen posts a day on which heatsink to get. all of them will do. you can get ahold of that fan by disabling the control in the bios, from there you'll need a manual fan controller to get the noise down. 30-50 bucks should get it where you want it.

1. no. i'm guessing q-fan, speedfan, or other fan control software is activated or conflicting with each other, or the fan is malfunctioning.

2. if the problem is the fan pins, bios or power supply, it won't help. it will only help if the fan is malfunctioning.

Your probably hitting a temp where the fan neds to run, then it cools and goes to a lower speed. Do you know anything about setting bios fan parameters or how to measure core temps to see if it relly is a temp problem or you have a bad fan? Your CPU fan should always be on, is it?

refurb or not, you should have a warranty. if got it from a brick and mortar shop, i would exchange it in case more serious than just a fan issue.

Thanks for the posts.
I looked at the bios and went to fan control. It seemed to have two options that could be changed: One has aggressive, normal, low. The other option is normal and slow.
(Sorry for the lack of speficity as I am at work and can't remember the exact options).

Also, I am not sure if I am running fan software - where can I find that?

You shouldn't need any fan software.

you would have had to intentionally load speedfan, etc. you would know because you would have put it on there and fiddled with it, so dont worry about that. Did changing the bios fan control settings help?

No, changing the fan settings really didn't help. The processor is running around 40 degrees Celsius, so that might be part of the problem. I'm going to try adjusting the temperature.

first, turn off any fan controls in bios. there may be more than one. turn off q-fan, cnq (i don't know what the intel equivalent is) and any acpi controls (except acpi ahcp).

this in itself may solve the problem.

then, go into windows and check task manager. look for anything suspicious, like hppwrmon.exe or something with "power" in the name. my wife's hp comes with fan control software and power/hibernate options separate from those in windows.

then, check windows. right click on the desktop, and check properties->screen saver-> power, and make sure everything in there is turned off or set to "never."

if, after all this, the fan still goes off and on, it's a bad fan.
