I just got my new parts today but i have been struggling trying to get it to work all day. I finally got it on and running but now the CPU is running hot. I bought arctic silver 5 and artic freezer 7 pro HSF. Soooo i would imgaine that theres no way that it can run that hot with these installed. I was only in BIOS and i got up to 78C* before i just turned the whole thing off. I was having trouble with the plastic pins trying to get the HSF on right, but i thought i got it and it doesnt shake. I applied a thin layer of AS5 on the HSF and a small square on the e8400 intel Core 2 duo.

Also i have reapplied thermal paste twice to both of them. Will reapplying for a third time harm anything?

And should i spread the paste myself(i've always used my finger in a plastic bag), or should i just put a dot on the cpu and smush it with my heat sink?

Thanks in advance!

Pull your MB out of the case, then uninstall your HSF. Clean up the mess you've made on both your HSF and your CPU. Now, apply your AS5 as per AS's website, re-install your HSF making sure that all of your pins are through the MB and latched properly... You should now be good to go.

Too bad you screwed the pooch on initial install, your HSF's pre-applied paste was quite a bit better than AS's own AS5...

the pushpins is not being pushed in fully.

also agree'd with croc about the paste being better... i put the heatsink on, and pulled it off, and put it back on about 3 times, and still yielded better temps with that fcuked up application than i did with a perfect application of as5

-keep your pushpins unlocked [i believe thats opposite the direction of the arrows]
-line them up with the holes, get a good view of all the pins being lined up and not at the side or off the holes... [can destroy the pushpins this way]
-press two of them in diagnolly... 2 at a time, than lock them in place

Only install a HS for the CPU with the Mobo removed from the case. Problem solved. I don't worry how much time it takes, there is only one way to do it right.

If you need new push pins:

Intel push pins

Ok well i will do that, thank you. Also I have the stock fan that came with the Intel Core 2 duo, you think that would be better off than this freezer 7 pro, it has paste pre applied to it, but no paste on the CPU.

here's the method i use:
http://www.innovationcooling.com/a [...] ctions.htm

it's the pushpins.

i looked at the design of the freezer 7, and it should work better than the stock cooler.

however, according to artic cooling's own website, it's barely better than the stock cooler.

it would be better to compare both, but with a new system, maybe it's not worth it.

dont make ur as5 too thick either but u wouldnt get temps like tht from too thick paste.. its your pins def.. make sure its seated nicely too.. you want like super thin layer of as5
