Incredible slowness

I have a Intel E4300 clocked at 2.4 gigahertz. ITs cooled to 40 degrees celcius. Also there is an 8800GT in there, with 2 gigs of DDR2-800 and windows XP Media Center 2005.

ITs running INCREDIBLY SLOW. I brought it over to a friends, and shennanigans started. I tried to bridge a connection, and then it slowed startling, then sped up, then I turned it off as it stopped again.

After try and try I finally have it back on at least, but it loads everything really slow. The memory is not tapped out, the processor isn't out either. Could it be the hard drive? When I boot the computer, explorer takes up to 5 minutes to load.

Any ideas?

More about incredible slowness
  1. If it isn't a clean windows install, wipe clean & start over. Chances are some leftover drivers are slowing things down.
  2. Virus? Malware? When did the last time you update your virus definition?

From your system I don't think it's a hardware issue.

If you are just upgrading and not clean install the OS, do clean install now.
