I have a 74 gig Raptor that is loud. I've read several threads where people attribute the noise to the fact that it's a 10k rpm drive. Well, I can't hear the motor running in a very quiet case (and as far as I know it runs continuously until the system is powered off). My gripe is the thunk-thunk-thunk noises that it makes moving the heads across the platters when it is seeking. The dang thing sounds like a coffee grinder or something.
Has anyone figured out how to isolate the drives from the case to reduce vibration and harmonics? How about a felt or rubber washer between the screws and the drive cage? With the case on a hardwood floor I can feel the vibrations through my feet when the drive is working!
It can't be helped, and it is because it is a high performance drive. The seeks are accelerated compared to normal drives, and are optimized for performance at the expense of noise. Basically, you're stuck with the noise if you want to keep the Raptor. Interestingly enough, this is not true with the newer Velociraptors, which are very quiet due to the fact that they are 2.5" drives.
