what should be idle/load temperatures for an E8400? Mine is idling at 47/51 (core0/core1) read using CoreTemp? Is there a problem?

Its seems alittle high to me. Three questions: Did you seat your cpu yourself? What is your room temperature? Does your case have good air flow?

Without knowing your information that ryanthesav has asked, your Idle temps are much too high. There is a known problem with 45 nanometer processors having faulty Digital Thermal Sensors sensors which may not correctly indicate Idle temps, yet correctly indicate Load temps. Download RealTemp http://www.xtremesystems.org/forum [...] p?t=179044 to test your sensors. If you want to calibrate your temps so that you're confident they're correct, then check out the Core 2 Quad and Duo Temperature Guide http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/ [...] ture-guide

hi and thanks ryanthesav...about the questions you asked:
i did seat the CPU myself
room temperature usually hovers around 26C; and
I have a CM Cosmos 1000, which has adequate air flow...

I downloaded the RealTemp, and it shows 34/38C (core0/core1) on idle now, which i think are ok. I will check out the Temperature Guide. Thanks CompuTronix..

Did you try the "Test Sensor" button in Real Temp?

That is a pretty small amount of movement, especially on Core 1.

Have you checked your motherboard manufacturer for a BIOS update that adds full 45nm processor support?

If you haven't flashed a BIOS before, read the manufacturer instructions carefully and then re-read them. It doesn't hurt to print out the instructions. If your motherboard manufacturer provides a method to update your BIOS through Windows, that may be your best option to use.

Also a room temperature of 26C should result with a cpu idle temperature average of 34C +/- 2C depending on your system hardware configuration, air flow restrictions etc.

Also there shouldn't be more than a 1C difference between core temperatures. Windows should be balancing the core loads equally.
