I'm trying to decide on which hard drives to use in building a RAID setup for my business. Working by myself for now so I don't need high network performance but rather focus on data security, but its sports photography so I generate a lot of bytes in every month. I've seen complaints about every brand and series of hard drive and was wondering if there is any independent data that shows actual failure rates of the different drives available. My plan now is to go with 1TB or bigger drives but it sounds as if reliability overall is poorer for these big drives that their predecessors.
any help or suggestions or where to look for data would be appreciated
Yes, russp, beware perpendicularly magnetized large storage volumes. I was advised against them by an engineer data recovery specialist. He said the reading heads were so small and nano-voltages so critical, we're at the hairy edge of the technology.
Read more about it: http://www.reuters.com/article/sci [...] 0220071009 They developed the concept, but these perpendicular storage devices are "dropping like flies".
Suggestions might be: RAID 1, with backup like CopyTo Synchronizer (http://www.kish-d.com/) to additional RAID1.
Thought about HDD Docks, but I need more info.
Also ask http://www.computer-help.net/ Davis M. McCarn is a brilliant engineer with excellent character and certainly worth writing or calling. Please say Phil from PA recommended you.
Western Digital "FBYS" HDDs are enterprise class hard drives and meant to operate 24/7 in a RAID setup. They are more expensive than other 1TB hard drives though.
