Webcam problems

Hello,
I have a old webcam that has both cam and mic, but for some reason the mic cuts in and out, and will not work right. I need to find out how to fix this problem so that I can talk while I see someome. A bad mic cable, a dirty plug on the end of the mic cable, a damaged mic jack on the computer, try another microphone.
