More about finish system raid q6600 monitor vista gt8800 7200
  1. The GT is a good card and will run most games at 1920x1200 fine but I would go with the GTS 512 instead, it's faster and has a better cooler. The cheapest prices on Newegg are $199.99 after rebate for a overclocked MSI GT and $249.99 for the MSI GTS 512, it's worth the extra $50.
  2. raid 0 is a waste
  3. anyone else feel this way.. there are a number of 8800 GT card to pick from.. I want with MSI NX8800GT because it was cheaper and didn't need the best video card..

Basically I am doing that because I want to have a fast boot up time.. I dont leave my computer on all the time but like a fast booting computer. I was looking @ two raptor drives in Raid 0. But heard that wasn't worth the money. Was going with Raid 0 7200.11.
  5. If you're already spending that much I'd go with the 8800GTS 512 over the GT. I don't have personal experience with either card but from reviews I've read the GTS has better cooling and has better performance.
  6. ok done... going with 8800GTS 512..

It appears that it will only save you 3 seconds on boot time. Here's a review to take a gander at comparing .11s in raid 0 to a single drive .11 and a single drive raptor 150. http://www.nextlevelhardware.com/storage/barracudaraid/

It's the only one I know of covering the .11s in raid 0. You might find another reason for raid 0 in there as well.
  8. thanks.. well I have a large collection of MP3d and videos that I convert. Many I need to convert into iphone format that can be timely. I read the review, looked like for MP3, moving files, or converting filings there is a noticible advantage. But you are right boot up time isn't going to be saving much. The Raptor boot up time is much better but still not with the extra cash.
  9. Comment: Nice rig, looks like mine, you're going to love it!
  10. any other comments.. getting close to order.. thanxs...

    lol.. thanks..

I sure hope so.. next part is building.. lol.
  12. I have the same hard drives in raid 0, but unfortunately for me I'm using nvidia software raid :-( I'm very tempted to unraid them, and put os and apps on one and page filing etc on the other, for average user with these disks in software raid 0 you won't notice any performance gains.
Intel software raid does have better performance then nvidia. If you have your heart set on raid (like i did) get a hardware raid controller (like I didn't, see if you can pick up a second hand one off ebay, coz a good one can get expensive new, and the the Rosewill raid controller sucks so don't even look at that one).

Monitor SCEPTRE brand is not so, so, well so reliable, get samsung.

PSU is awesome, I have that one aswell, cables are nice and long for you case.

I got the q6600, hmmm sometimes i wish i just stuck with a faster dual core, because it's not like i'm running four/three demanding applications at once.

Sure you want Vista, that's a whole other story, I stuck with xp pro 32bit.
  13. really thought 64 bit was the WTG.. in either XP 64 bit or Vista 64 bit..

Yea.. SCEPTRE isn't the best but is over $100 cheaper then something good...

  14. I have the SAMSUNG 245BW Black 24", but the 22" have same resolution, personally 1920x1200 "looks" better and sharper on the 22" than the 24", 24" is nice for movie watching and playing Eve-Online on lol.
vista will drive you mad, when you get a creative x-fi sound card, or a raid controller you soon find out that you have problems with vista, pretty much everything supports winxp pro, there is also more support for 32bit than 64bit.
  15. Oh and one more thing I hope you're going to oc at some point. Although the Antec Nine Hundred is a nice case and the cooling is awesome it is noisy, keep this in mind. So if you're not going to oc try another case, cheaper perhaps or something quieter, I got the antec p180, and can't go wrong at $89.99 on newegg.
  16. Forget Raid!
    P180 or Pi82.
Don't let anyone put you off Vista. Their so full of it!

You're so right, forget windows altogether the future is linux, Ubtuntu is noob friendly, I like Fedora only because I used Redhat prior to it.
  18. well I am figuring on dealing with Vista 64 bit and dealing with issues. That will be the platform going forward. If I wasn't getting all new stuff then maybe I wouldn't go with Vista in fear that certain hardware would have drive issues. That is not to say there wont be driver issues but less likely with newer stuff.

Order two Seagates WTF.. I will give it a shoot. If it doesn't work out, I would always have one as OS with room and one for data.
  19. As for the monitor.. I have looked.. I dunno.. I order the 24' already.. if it is really bad I will return or pull it out to ebay and try a Sammy 22' inch. Worth a shot. Otherwise looking @ another $100 for Sammy monitor.

Guessing better quailty and monitor comes with a number of attractive features.
  20. Go for the Westy monitor, it uses MVA panel which should be better than samsung 245BW's TN panel.
Bestbuy has it on sale for $350 w/o rebate.

  21. this there a favorite 8800 GT card? I was looking at MSI 8800 GT but open to other options in the same or alittle higher price range.
  22. Seems like the evga is the gold standard

  23. Yes the evga is the way to go for their stepup program. Get the gts512 its quieter and more capable.
If you like that monitor great, its all personal taste anyway. but the monitor is what you stare at all day. get the best one you can afford, your eyes will thankyou.
why ultimate vista? vista64 home premium should be fine. unless ultimate has a feature you need, or want, then go for it.
I was hesitant on vista also. Im happy I got it. everything works on vista64 for me<so far>. all new games run great and the few older ones I play still work.
Dont waste time with raid. but i think a 500gb drive just for an os is overkill dont you think. One drive is fine. save the money on second drive and get a usb 160gb drive for external backup. you can always add a second internal drive if you need it.
But I can understand if you burn alot of music or dvd's that you want to keep on a second drive. then go with your original plan
    good luck :)

I'm only aware of one 22" monitor that supports 1920 x 200 and that is the Lenovo L220x. It's a S-PVA screnn not TN so it's quite step above most all consume grade monitors. 92% color gamut, 106 dpi and true 24 bit color (3 colors x 8 bits). Most consumer monitors are only 6 bit.
  25. Where can I find step by step instruction for putting all the pieces together (physically building) and formatting the drives ect and installing the OS?
  26. This is abit dated but should work..

    Anything else people have?
  27. check youtube, but that covers it and should work
  28. with the ASUS P5K-E motherboard I am not seeing a soundcard with it. Thought came with PCI-E basic soundcard.

Search Yahoo on "PC Building Guide" and you will get a list of sites.

Looking real close at the ram you choose you can see CL5, here is some an alternative CL4 which is certified with your MB on the Corsair site.

    CORSAIR XMS2 DHX 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X4096-6400C4DHX - Retail $104 after $40 mail in rebate.

  31. So the one I have picked out is CL5. How much faster is CL4 in the running of the computer?
  32. Well I went to CORSAIR website
    http://www.corsair.com/configurator/product_results.aspx?id=393426#other_modules

Looks like the only 2 gig * 2 chips it suggests are $200
    TWIN2X4096-6400C4DHX
    TWIN2X4096-6400C5
    TWIN2X4096-6400C5DHX

Guess what I would want to know how much of a difference is this going to make and can I OC the slower memory if I needed to.

I guess the question is what is the performance difference between the two? One running @ 5-5-5-18-2T and the other running @ 4-4-4-12-2T? What is it going to mean for OCing?

Chris I guarantee if you look close in the list on the website you’ll see the ram I choose is on that list, I believe it was near the top.

If you can purchase CL4 for around the same price as CL5 get the CL4.

CAS Latency (CL) is the ratio between column access time and the clock cycle time.
If you're pushing performance to the limit as do some over-clockers, or gamers, it may have some relevance. On the other hand, in everyday systems the relevance is nominal at best.

Lower CL is better, and as a general rule of thumb more expensive. If you were to pull out some old technologies (pc3200 or lower even) you will notice that they have really low CL (like2)… However the newer rams (pc10000+) will all have higher CL as the technology is not there yet(like CL5+).
  35. thanks.. I did find the two listed on Consair website... Both the one I had link and the one you had link. Originally it was only bring back top three choices. But once I drilled out into page I found both types of memory.
  36. Update.. I did have issue with PK5-E motherboard and LAN connection. Not sure what I am going to do about it. I was unable to get it to work. I went into the bias and made sure it was enabled but lights for LAN connector never came on. I downloaded the newest drivers from the ASUS website, still no luck. Thinking the Connectors on the motherboard could be bad.

Now I have a OEM version of Vista 64. If I were to send back the motherboard, I have to call up Microsoft and tell them what happened and let them release the copy so I could install another board. I went to Best Buy and bought a Wireless LAN card. I guess the question is what should I do going forward.

    1) What is the performance differences between a wireless LAN card and hard connection.

    2) What is the difference between a card run LAN card and one from motherboard?

    3) Should I just keep the PK5-E rather then go through the hassle of sending the PK5-E back?

    Thanks,

    -Chris
  37. If your MB has hardware issues I would send it back. You never know, the lan port might just be the tip of the iceberg.

I would weather the storm and send it back and talk to microsoft.

    But thats just me.
  38. You sure you have the other end of the lan cable plugged in? If so, cah is correct. RMA that puppy now and avoid the headache of potentially messing up something else.
  39. yea.. I tested that with my laptop..
  40. I never seen a situation where no lights come on when you plug in a live cable. Figure the motherboard is messed up.. I am on the phone with tech. support. What fun..
  41. Got off the phone with ASUS support for motherboards (812-282-2787).

I currently @ work not with my new build but wanted to ask him if there was anything I was missing about P5K-E. ASUS totally wasn't helpful, asked to a ton of basic questions (which is normal). Then when I mentioned the word forums, ASUS tech. guy goes "Listen son you can't believe everything you see in them". I cut him off to correct him that I wasn't his son, so missed the rest of the lecture of why computer forums aren't reliable resources. I then it depended which forum it was and what person. He then went on about about his 10 year ago hear goes to forums and at that point I again cut him off again and return to my issue. He couldn't help me or even suggest possible issues. I mentioned the fact that I bought the motherboard from Newegg and if I can't get it resolved I may just return it there. He again said you going to return a motherboard that you don't know is even broken. I don't know. Guy wasn't cool. Two big thumbs down on ASUS techincal support. He may not have been able to help me because I wasn't in front of the computer but didn't need to be an @ss.
  42. I only got hostile after the guy called me "son" and went off topic about his 10 year ago. Can't call me son and you can't lecture me about your 10 year old. I like ASUS products and this is the third motherboard I bought him then. The guy talked down to me the whole time. The facts about calling me son and telling me about his 10 year old were just the icing. He basically was a d*ck from the start, and I took it until he called me son. At that point I couldn't take it.

But hey might just be one bad apple.

And I am not talking to the guy about Ocing.. I am talking about basic LAN connection. I still believe I will call later tonight and motherboard will be dead in the water when it comes to LAN line working.

Agreed, Send it back, dont risk it.... Also you paid for that lan connector to work.
  44. Chris, you could also call back and hopefully get a different tech.
  45. yea.. for sure on that one.. OMG.. I was so pissed.. lol. is there any reason you can think of why lights on motherboard wouldn't turn on if you put in a live cable for LAN?.. reguardless of OS.
  46. Just for giggles try reseting the cmos jumper if it has one or remove the battery then go back in and make sure the lan is turned on in the bios.

I know you said you checked it but maybe it needs a kick in the pants. But still ... that is bogus , I would RMA... maybe go with another brand is possible. But they are all going to have a % of failures .
  47. actually when playing with OCing in bios.. I got the setting wrong and the computer wouldn't come up.. I then, had to pull the battery out and move the jumper, to get motherboard to reset. Good idea though.
