So I just got my system together, parts are detailed on this post,
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/255954-31-advice-build

I have read the intro to overclocking sticky on this forum several times, and have tried to tinker with the settings it says, disable the energy savings features, boost the fsb a bit while leaving the voltage control on auto, but I can't seem to get any of the settings to save through a reboot.
Is there something im missing? I hit save and exit in bios, which saves, exits and reboots, but when I get back to BIOS, everything is reset to default settings.
I am realy confused.
Like the topic says, ive got a q6600 on a Gigabyte GA-x48-DS4. I would like to OC to between 2.8-3.2ghz so that my HD4870 gpu as more stuff to do, but I can't get any changes to stick for some reason.

Any tips?

I have used the age old trick of asking a stupid question and then talking myself through to
the answer before anyone else needs to help.
I ran my rig at 3.0 ghz last night (9.0x333) with prime95 for 10 hrs without error, temps at 50-55C
with my cpu fan on medium.
Turns out the auto voltage controls were screwing everything up. The first settings i got to stick were
2.75ghz on stock voltage(1.325) which is lower voltages than the auto settings were pushing
to cpu-z. I had to bump my fsb voltage +0.1v to get it to boot at 333x9, and i moved the vcore to 1.356
just to be safe.
Temps were no higher on these OC settings than they were straight out of the box due to the wonky
voltage control settings that were on automatic.
I'm gonna try 3.2 tonight and see how that goes.

Oh, i also lowered the SPD for the ram so that its running as close as I can get to its rated frequency(800mhz)
is this something I need to do?

i am also in the situation of having a Q6600 on a Gigabyte GA-X48-DS4, but i am not sure what ram i am after to fully use the 1600 FSB on the mobo. 800 or 1066?

FSB: 4x400=1600mhz
Cpu: 9x400=3.6ghz
Ram: 2x400=800mhz

So that's q6600@3.6ghz and ddr2 800mhz.

I have a Q6600 cpu and a X48-DS4 mobo (bios version F2). I've never overclocked a processor before - can someone tell me how to do this with this mobo (or point me to a how-to/wiki)?

I have 8 GB (4 x 2 GB) PC2-8500/DDR2-1066 installed, I've added two case fans and a better than stock heatsink (Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro) in preparation for this project. Also, I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit (in case that's relevant).

TIA
