Why my windows is unable to format a disc?

When I was trying to copy some pictures to a DVD, a message said, "Windows was unable to complete the format." I had backed my pictures into DVDs for years, and I don't understand why my laptop wouldn't work this time.

Try another disk. May have a faulty one. It happens !
