No (E) drive; no DVD-CD ROM found

Hello, I ran did a diskmgmt.msc and the only drive I have is C. In device manager there is nothing to indicate my DVD-CD ROM. My doors do not open, have tried to open with a pin, but it doesn't work. My registry files do not show after a search. I do not know how long this has been going on as I do not use the cd-dvd very often, but need to install my d-link and find I am unable to do so. What else can I do that will not screw up my PC. I can do some repairs, but am afraid to do anything very technical. I am using XP Thanks for your help.
