Raid OS?

i have a raid ? that i can't seem to find answer by googling....

is there any type of raid controller ie on board, add on card etc... that allows you to setup the raid prior to OS installation? or do all controllers have to be configured while installing your OS?

Any true hardware RAID can be configured before installing the OS; Motherboard (or fake) RAID requires configuration during OS install due to the heavy dependance on drivers to perform the RAID functionality.
