Experiences with USB powered external drives?!

Hello,

I have just bought an external case that an internal 2.5" hard drive can be installed inside it. I have not received it yet. It has no power supply since it's powered by USB. Does anyone have any experience with this, or with USB powered external drives?! Would there be any speed/power issues?!

I am thinking of monitoring a Hitachi 320 GB drive inside it.

There should not be any issues, at least if you plug it into a USB 2.0. USB 1.1 may not supply enough power for it.

there shouldn't be any problems with speed or power if it's a usb 2.0 port. however, usually i make sure to plug in BOTH of the usb heads into the computer first, then plug the cable into the drive. i've experienced that sometimes the drive does not get recognized by the computer properly if i plug the cable into the drive first.
