"Just when you thought your home theater was up to snuff, even higher
definition TV sets are arriving. Mitsubishi on Thursday unveils the
first consumer HDTVs to come to market capable of displaying a format
called 1080 progressive — 1080p — considered the high-definition holy
grail because it provides twice the resolution of most current sets...."

I believe the writer should research his facts a little better. The Sharp
45 inch LCD is capable of 1080p and has been out for quite some time. Maybe
that's the information Mitsubishi fed him.

Of course Mitsubishi fed him that claim. That's what press releases are
all about.

I haven't checked any local stores, but aren't the Samsung 1080p sets
available yet? The bulk of the line was supposed to ship during June,
but the first model was supposed to be out back in February. I guess
I'll have to look around just to see what's actually being shown in
stores these days.

Well, it looks like maybe Samsung has changed their plans. Looking over
the sets on their website, I can find only one 1080p set, and that's a
rather large direct view LCD for $7000. No 1080p DLPs in sight. Guess
you can't always trust what vendors say at CES!

The planned 1080p models (HLR5688W, HLR6768W, HLR6168W, HLR5668W) aren't
even listed on the site.

Seriously, a 4X wobulation on 1280 by 720 gives you 2560 by 1440, or 3.7
mpixels, photo-quality resolution indeed. Gives an idea what's ahead.
