My old TV accepts the dvi connector from the Direct tv receiver. The new
TV will accept the hdmi connector. Will there be any signal loss with an
adaptor?

A DVI cable passes Digital HD Picture only.

HDMI cable passes both Digital HD Picture & Digital Sound.

A DVI to HDMI cable passes Digital HD Picture only.

A Component Cable passes Analog HD Picture only.

I think that DVI and HDMI are pin compatible when it comes to video. There
should be no loss with an adapter.

Also, with digital, there's not really a notion of quality loss. There
will never be a slight degradation of picture quality. If something goes
wrong, it will be very noticable.

Yep, no degradation at all. Not to worry.
