Disk read error

Hello,
My computer was working fine, but my son placed a password on it and forgot it and we weren't able to get in. So, I pressed F10 then pressed "restore defaults", then I saved the changes and exited. When the screen came back on there was a message..."a disk read error occurred press ctr+alt+del to restart." After I pressed ctr+alt+del, the same message just comes back and I'm not able to access anything. I am sending this message using a different computer. Any advice would be appreciated.

It would help to know computer model, whether you can startup in safe mode, and whether you have a Windows install disk or any recovery disks from the manufacturer, or any you may have created.
