I was thinking of going to the new Penryn processor in June. Im probably not going to o/c (never have and probably never will). This is only for a gaming machine. I wanted to do some minor tinkering and upgrade to DX10. Is there a good performance gain from a E6300 and Saphire x1900xtx to Q9450 combined with a ATIx2? I'm waiting for the reviews of Penryn, if they are less than stellar then I will wait for Nehalem. If the reviews are glowing like when Conroe came out 2 summers ago, I have the urge to get a Penryn and build another computer and keep it for a while and maybe have the urge again and go for Nehalem. Part of me is not too thrilled having a 1.86GHZ processor and I know everyone says overclock, but it's way past my intelligence and my luck it will explode! After I built my computer 2 summers ago, I was glowing for a year lol I was so proud of myself!
Anyway, if Penryn is a good upgrade from E6300, then I was going to research motherboards.
they seem to have penryns Q9300 too
and they're not boxed btw, they're all OEMS
*edit*
seems you're not very connected with computer news.. as the penryn as been reviewed many times.
I'm on my computer maybe a few times a week, if the news isn't in front of me, at the moment I don't have the time to search. I go to simple sights but it's been all quiet. I only posted this because I knew the Penryns where coming out at the end of March and was curious if any serious reviews came out yet. I got the Microcenter email announcing that the Penryn 9300 has arrived.
$199 for a Q6600 vs $349 for a Q9450? Unless you REALLY need SSE4 or lower power consumption, the relatively small performance increase really isn't worth a $150 premium IMO.
If you are not going to OC go with an e8400. It is at 3 ghz stock, has the new architecture, and now cost about the same or even less than similiarly clocked Conroe duals. The quads need overclocking to really shine at present due to the fact that most apps don't multithread well to make use of the extra cores.

Dude? What are you talking about?
The e8400 is one of the best overclockers there is right now.

theres no such board right now that will let you upgrade to nehalem when its available this year... for q9450, try an x38 chipset. q9450 should oc to 3.6 easily....
