Overclocking the Athlon X2 4200

System Specs are

Amd X2 4200
Asus m2n sli deluxe
2 gb trancsend dual channel ddr2 800mhz
ati hd 4850
thermaltake 600w tough power
Ok what i want to do is squeeze more performance out of my hd 4850 nd since my cpu is the obvious bottleneck i really need help overclocking. I've nver overclocked a cpu before. I use a stock cooler. My idle temps are 52-53 degrees nd under full easily crosses 60 degrees. I know many of you guyz would consider that very high. My ambient case temps are 37-38. I've a.i clocked it 8 % more nd the temps i recorded ar idle 53 nd load 67. I've improved the case cooling as much as i can. I have a 140mm rear fan. 92mm side intake pointing at the 4850. 92mm top fan. my goal is to reach atleast 2.6 or 2.7 on air. is it safe to continue or should i jus dismiss the idea of overclocking considering the already high temps.
and also cpu z reports cpu core voltage at 1.1 v..i've read in reviews tht its rated for 1.35v operation. Disabling the amd cool n quiet function has not helped either. should i manually increase or let it be.

I just want to repeat what you said... those ARE really high temps. Even for a stock cooler that sounds high. If you're going to get an aftermarket CPU heatsink/fan just make sure you get one that'll be compatible with your next rig... I just don't see there being much life left in a 4200.

Like the other guy said... a 5200+ could be had for very little $, but I think that's an AM2 processor and I think your board is a Socket 939

my board aint socket 939. its am2 nd yea its a bit old i bought it 2 years back. im tryin to wait it out until the next platform change to am3. i wouldn bother spending on an aftermarket cooler but i could think abt changing to 5200 or 6400 but wil it be worth it cos im tryin to save up for the am3 change
