USBs & Pointer Pad Troubles

All 4 USB ports won't work and will immediately lock the system whenever a good USB stick is inserted. (Once it recognised the stick briefly, but wouldn't read it, and promptly locked up.
Also, mouse pointer pad usually unresponsive (90%) and is erratic 5% and has worked rarely (5%).
(It's a Compaq Presario R-4000)
Any thoughts?
Flakey Hard drive?
Mobo?
Physical connections?

You know it's a good USB stick because it works on other computers right? Anyways, are your drivers for your motherboard updated? If so, then it could be something physical, so I suggest you have it checked by a technician. Problem is, your unit is pretty old, so I wish you good luck! Let me know how things turn out, will you?
