It gives an increase in the available bandwidth, which while we don't currently have the cards to take full advantage of it in my opinion the fact that it has been brought in before the potential problem rears its head is good.
Making the boards backwardly compatible just makes so much sense both from the business point of view(Increased sales due to larger market) and from a end users point of view it makes the boards standard, therefore cheaper to manufacture.

Power my friend, power. PCIe 2.0 provides alot more power through the slot than PCIe 1.x, thus reducing the number of cards that will need auxilary power cables, or the number of power cables needed on a card. Do you really want to see video cards needing 3 power cables in the future? Personally, I think 1 is too many.

What was the point of AGP8x if the slot was compatible with AGP4x? It's about supporting both new standard and old standard cards on the same motherboard.
