For around 4 days now, I had been struggling with the whole random reboot issue (sysdata.xml/minidump as well as numerous other Windows stop errors) and could not get my computer stable on STOCK settings. I am using:
* ASUS P5N-D
* Core 2 Duo E8400, Zalman 9500, MX-2 thermal paste
* 3x Western Digital Caviar SE 250GB 7200RPM (two set in RAID 0, one for media storage)
* 2x OCZ HPC Reaper Edition 1GB DDR2 800
* PC Power and Cooling 750W Quad
* EVGA 8800GT
* all of which are housed in an Antec 900 case (so you could imagine it's relatively cool)
The above issue was solved by swapping out the RAM with my other computer and realizing that it worked well without any BSODs for 2 hours straight (as opposed to 5-10 minutes with my faulty RAM). To remedy this I am going to RMA my OCZ RAM back to Newegg and I'm hoping to get 2x Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR2 800 kit. In addition to this... with a game that is highly appealing to me (Conan )... I want to be using Vista 64bit so I'm planning on buying another set of Ballistix.
What I wanted to know is:
* Would the above RAM be suitable for my setup? I've read that ASUS promotes Crucial and Corsair as some of the more recommended brands for their boards and I also read from another thread here that OCZ has problems with said boards.
* Could anyone with a similar setup give me tips on overclocking my system to a stable setting? This is actually the first time I've built a computer on my own and I'd like to bring it to its full potential (safely, though! I'd like it to last at least 4 years or more).
* Has there been any problem with using Vista 64bit with a setup like mine and would it be OK to 4x 1GB RAM if all I'm really going to be using it for is gaming?
* When I do set it up... I'm going to be using RAID0 so all I would need to do is change the nVidia drivers to Vista as opposed to XP? Should I be using the CD for BIOS and other such updates or should I get them directly from nVidia, etc. (and in what order...)
* Any other comments or concerns will be highly helpful. I'm sorry if this is a lot to ask... but the last couple of days have been really stressful regarding my computer... and by the time I try using it again I want it to be in top shape. I just don't want to be stuck in a continuous loop of failure D:
My rig is very similar (See below), so I'll throw some voltages at you, but keep in mind im at 4Ghz with my E8400.
Vcore in bios: 1.425 (1.38 in windows)
Dram: 2.2 (mobo overvolts by 0.07V)
Northbridge: 1.45 (because I have 4 sticks of Crucial)
Crucial Ballistix are at 4-4-4-12 890Mhz for 1:1 with my CPU (445x9)
It was a little tricky to find these voltages for 4 sticks of memory to be stable, but it was worth it in the end. And I have Vista 64 with no issues.
Your voltages could be completely different, but you do have an asus board so it could be similar. Keep in mind that voltages you select in Bios will be different in windows.. Use PC Probe to see what they actually are in windows and then change them accordingly in Bios.
