I'm looking to build a very quiet and cheap little box to do nothing more than simply serve/NAS. But, looking over a lot of hardware, it seems everything short of old CPU's have fans. I really don't need so much muscle to power such a box, but finding old chips that didn't require fans are either more expensive than a modern chip, or require also a bad old motherboard that doesn't support PCI/PCIe/SATA standards of today, which make it pointless. So I'm trying to find a cpu that is modern and can run fanless. I've had someone tell me to simply underclock a chip, big time, to then not need a fan, but even if I could do that, I have no idea how much I'd have to underclock it run it fanless and stable for extended amounts of time.
So I seek thoughts from others.
Fanless modern CPU possible? A cheap $40 dualcore AMD chip underclocked with no fan? Thoughts?
get a TRUE or some massive heatsink and dont put a fan on it!
edit: to be honest though, just get any random cpu cooler and run it on lowest rpm... my xigmatek HDT-S963 is silent on its lowest setting from where i sit at the comp... i have to lean in to hear it, all i can hear is my 250mm fan lol

I would think an E5200 would be ideal. Good clockspeed, 45nm so it will be cool. Check out www.frostytech.com, next to there Top Heatsinks by performanace they also maintain a list of Top Heatsinks by quietness. Worth checking out me thinks.
