I'm putting together a shortlist of parts I want for my new PC and am down to the PSU, I read the faq/guide, did some searching and checked local stock and I think the Zalman 850W ZM850-HP will suit my needs, but given this is the first time I've put together a higher end PC (previously only put together 1 budget and 2-3 mid range PCs) and I've needed to pick out a PSU (the others all worked with case supplied PSUs) I figured I'd better check with others if I'm going to overload anything.
Proposed system:
Part - Model - Price (In AUD)
------------------------------------------------------------
CPU - Q9550 - $699
Cooler - ASUS Arctic Square - $78
GPU1 - GeForce 9800gtx - $???
GPU2 - GeForce 9800gtx - $???
MB - XFX nForce 780i - $399
RAM - 2x Kingston 2gb 6400 HyperX C4 Twin - $190
HDD1 - WD 150GB Raptor - $249
HDD2 - WD 500GB SATA II 16MB - $125
Monitor - BenQ FP241W - $979
Case - Antec Nine Hundred - $162
PSU - Zalman 850W ZM850-HP - $249
I should probably clarify that the ram will be 4 1gb sticks and I'll be over-clocking the CPU to 3.4ghz. I'll also have some DVD burner and probably later on a Blu-Ray burner too, as well as other little bits here and there like an extra 120mm fan on the window.
Will the Zalman 850W handle the load?
BTW I will get only 1 9800gtx initially, then if it starts to feel underpowered I'll add in the 2nd, but need to know if it'll support both. Obviously it's only going to be speculation if it'll handle 2 9800gtx cards until the official specs are officially announced tomorrow... *checks time* today... *factors in timezone diff to america* tomorrow, but if it's safe to assume that it'll run them easily then that's all I need to know. Or if it's cutting it too close to being able to run all that then some suggestions at better PSUs would be appreciated, and if possible to list more than one as Australia often wont get some makes and models despite how good they may be, PC P&C PSUs don't seem to be available here for example .
Yeah the 850W will be more than enough. See my profile for what I'm running on an 850W PSU and my machine will draw a lot more power than your planned machine will.
The Zalman should be good. I particularly like the idea of a heat pipe cooler.
For the ram, I would suggest a 4gb kit in a 2x2gb configuration. It is usually cheaper that way, and preserves your option to go to 8gb. Also, some motherboards have more problems overclocking 4 sticks of ram than 2.

Cool thanks for the help , I had picked it because when I was looking up any PSUs that were sli certified on slizone I noticed that this was capable of running 2 9800gx2s so I figured it would probably be enough . Even if I only need a 500-600W PSU it's nice to know I have extra headroom if I decide to upgrade or add stuff (HDDs) at some point, better safe than sorry .
O and thanks for the tip on the ram geofelt, I'll see if I can find a 4gb kit of the stuff. I had read somewhere that having 4 1gb sticks might give a speed increase, but I thought that sounded flakey since it's dual channel not quad channel . As I understand things the 6400 ram shouldn't need to be over clocked anyway since the stock fsb on the ram matches the over clocked fsb on the MB/CPU. Also I doubt I'd put in more than 4gb, but it'd be nice to know that I could .
Man I'm looking forward to putting this thing together
your psu should be enough. One thing to consider...
the higher watt usage you demand from the psu, the louder the psu will be. My corsair 550vx gets quiet loud when im drawing 400+ watts. So to keep the noise down, I bought a secondary psu. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applica [...] CatId=1077 you might want to consider it great product.

Noise isn't an issue for me, I'm happy enough just to turn up the vol or put on headphones .
I can safely say I wont be getting any 9800GTXs now (way too crap and overpriced) so I'll be dropping in some cheapo mid range card like a 9600 or 8800gt until nVidia release a real graphics card. I still want to allow for SLI as if the new card also turns out to be crud I can just drop in whatever I get now, or perhaps 2 of the new cards if I'm sufficiently impressed.
But I've noticed that since the 2nd graphics card is on the lowest PCI-E slot which is only a few cm above the PSU I'm now concerned the fan on the Zalman PSU is an exhaust that'll be pumping out additional heat directly onto one of (if not the) hottest components in the case which I'm pretty sure is a bad thing .
Any ideas/suggestions on how to remedy the situation? Different PSU that sends the hot air out the back instead? Bigger case?
As mentioned in my first post I'm unable to find any stores in my area that stock any PC P&C products . Is it possible they might go by a different brand name in Australia? I've seen different names for brands in Australia compared to America before, most notably until a few years ago (and even still in some areas) "burger king" went by the name "hungry jacks".
Sorry, I missed that part about PC P&C not available in Australia. They might be going by OCZ (OCZ bought them some time ago).
Can you tell us some URLs where you can buy parts? There's got to be something similar to Newegg or NCIX in Australia.
How about the Antec TPQ-850, can you find that one? It's a very good PSU, according to what I've read. It's overkill, but you mentioned you like some extra headroom.

There are a few other stores that have a storefront in Melbourne that can be found through http://www.pricespy.com.au and/or http://www.shopbot.com.au but the results from them are mostly online only stores or interstate stores .
Cool thanks, the Antec TPQ 850W looks like it'll suit my needs well . Not sure about the yellow racing stripes, but I'd rather an awesome running computer than one that looks nice but overloads and wont turn on
