i'll be building my first computer soon (3-4 weeks +++ so i can have a look at the q9450 and 9800 series video cards), but i am having trouble deciding on mobo.
looking at mobos i see the ones based on 750i are $100 cheaper than the 780i.
is the 780i worth the price? in what ways is it better?

the upcoming 790i will be a no go cause its ddr3 only. and also, not counting overclocking ability, in what ways is the x38 better than 780i? disregard sli vs. xfire too.

Tell me why you have your eyes on the 780i boards? I don't see you mentioning that you are going to do sli/Tri sli? If you are only going to do a single GPU than I recemmend you get a X38 chipset.

There are many X38 boards, but I believe only 1 will work best for you.

The Asus Maximus Formula motherboard is what I have in mind.
Im guessing you'll use this computer for gaming, this motherboard is well future proof and made for gaming.

For more information on this board, check out this website:

-Its Asus website, and its information directly on this board, so you click and your there, no searching needed.

i guess i have to refrase my problem:
i have been looking at the maximus formula and the 780i, both are 250$.
when i saw the 750i i didnt understand why it was so much cheaper. how is the 780i better? is it worth the extra 100$?
as for the x38 part i was just wondering if there was much difference between it and the 780i, apart from sli. i guess there isnt much, just trying to figure out if i was missing something  since everyone says to go x38 if youre not doing sli. i mean they are the same price, why not buy the 780i and have the option?

For the differences between 7x0i & 6x0i chipsets:

http://www.nvidia.com/docs/IO/3538 [...] Screen.pdf

X38 generally overclocks better than 780i. In fact, the same is true for Intel VS nvidia chipsets. Beside, Intel chipsets can only do CrossFire whereas nvidia ones do SLI. The exception is Skulltrail which does SLI and made by Intel. There are also feature & driver differences. nForce chipsets use a unified driver that supports all the features from network to IDE/SATA. Expect to install individual drivers for Intel boards.

Yup, from what i read the 790i will support only DDR3.

It's your money. You decide how to spend it.

I'm still a bit confused about the pros/cons of the 750i compared to the 780i.

Does it come down to whether you want SLI or not?

akhilles, my question is what the difference between 750i and 780i is, not 7x0i vs. 6x0i. but the webpage had information regarding that too, so thanks.
it seems the only differences between the 780i and 750i are:
- 780i has 3 way sli, 750i 2 (more than enough for me)
- 780i has dual 1000mbs ethernet, 750i only single 1000mbs. is there a significant difference in internet speed because of this?
- 750i only supports ram up to ddr2 800
-780i is esa certified, 750i not (what does this mean?)
-780i has 6 sata connectors vs. 750i 's 4

so, if i have the exact same system on a 780i vs a 750i will there be difference in performance?
the 750i does seem to get some not too good reviews though, i dont want to skimp on my mobo, but if i can get something equally good as the 780i for 100$ less...

Of course there will be differences. The question is is it worth it? Only you can determine that.

The most notable is the x16 PCI-E SLI vs x8. You can google 750i & 780i reviews for the benchmarks. The other is chipset cooling. 780i has better active cooling with a bundled fan.

The dual 1Gb Lans (download 780i pdf from nvidia for details) can be used together to boost the speed.

If you're looking for a true x16 SLI board for less, this is pretty decent. It's a special 650i edition that does true x16 SLI. The rest don't. The only thing is it may not support Yorkfields.

http://support.asus.com/cpusupport [...] SLI%20Plus

Finally, if Yorkfield is something you want to upgrade to, here's another special 650i edition. Does true x16 SLI & Yorkfields.

thanks for the reply. i think i'll go for the evga 780i. 100$ isnt really that much and i think its worth investing in a good motherboard. besides i am planning on getting the q9450 processor which is yorkfield (?) i read it would have a fsb of 1333mhz so the 780i can run it. would have had to get a x38 if it was 1600 + all the extra features of the 780i sounds nice

hmm i think i ve changed my mind again. i am really never going to go sli..... i think the maximus formula is the best choice. but i am a little concerned because it seems so many have probelms with it, especially with new technology.

Yes, it is. I would grab that cpu if it overclocks better than q6600.

Excellent decision on the mobo. You can drop in any single video card & it will work just fine. And the X38 will overclock better than anything nvidia.

BTW, if you want the fastest & most affordable gpu, look at HD3870X2. The new Geforce won't be out til the 25th or April.

which one?
ASUS Maximus Formula or...
EVGA 780i

pros/cons?  From what I can gather, am I correct in assuming that the ASUS won't support two GPU units?  But it will support the new q9450 when it comes out?

I'm not planning to have two GPU units.

Amazing how people are too lazy to do their own research.  I mean all the poster had to do was go to nvidia.com and he would have known what the differences were.
Instead, they take even more time to make a post at THG so someone else can do the research for them, in turn not only wasting their own time but the time of the people helping, and the time of the people that actually have to read through this pathetic post.

I feel sorry for people like you because you are tremendously unhappy.  For the record, I have met some wonderful, very kind people on this forum that were more than happy to help me.  You know, some people do like to help others.  Your selfishness and egocentricity must prevent you from ever experiencing the pleasure from aiding another person.

You have added nothing to this post or this forum.  I would not miss you if you left.

whats the point of forums if you cant ask for help..... no one is forcing you to answer.
also the link that was given isnt too easy to spot on nvidia's site + i didnt know what half of the differences actually meant

by the way i think i will go for the evga 8800gts g92 and see what pops up for the step up plan. buying my rig at the end of march. so that will give me through june to wait and see what comes. most likely wont get the 9800 gx2 since it wont be to good and is more or less just 2 gts g92. its more or less the same concept as the 7900 gx2 or whatever it was. the "real" 9800 series i think will be out around may or june. if its july ill wait another month for the step up plan so i can get the 9800 gt/s
if i am mistaken ill just get the 8800gts g92 anyway

I agree with the last 2 posters.  There's more to the decision than just doing research on the manufacturer's site.  Getting the opinions of experienced people in this forum is very valuable.  The post is not at all pathetic, and speaking as a person who is also trying to design a new system I find the post to be very useful.  Thanks to all (except MrsBytch).

I was just reading this post as I am in the same boat ie want a new system with Intel's new Quad core but am in the same boat as the poster. I also wanted to point out that P35 board from asus ie the P5K series or this X38 series Maximus........?
I am aware that both have a following so I wanted to add my 2 bits to this already conversation.
I am looking out for a healthy outcome on this topic.
Thanks
