So I'm coming back to the Desktop scene after about 6 years of straight laptop use :pfff: . Reason being, parents bought my computers for me, so they chose what I got, and they said laptops were more "conducive for school." Anyways, now I'm going to be 21 soon and I'm running back to the lovely sound of tower fans running at high rpm's like a kitty to catnip. So being a laptop user for the last 6 years I haven't looked at all at OC-ing. And based on what I've been told and reading very basic info on it, does it shorten the lifespan of the CPU and the GPU (assuming you OC them both). And as for OC-ing my future build, if I do do it, I will have a hardcore pro gamer help me with mine, he knows what he is doing, if it wasn't for him I probably wouldn't even consider OC-ing b/c I wouldn't want to lose the PC. Thanks for any further info on the subject ^_^

Its hard to understand what you want. You want to learn how to overclock? It depends if your going with amd or intel to start off.

Well I read that it shortens the lifespan of the processor, and I was wondering how much shorter it makes it. As for the processor I'm going for it's the E8500 from Intel.

It WILL shorten the life of the CPU, but by how much you can never know. It mostly depends on the voltage, the heat and "luck" (not all processor will react the same way to the 2 other factors). My guess is that with mild OC and decent cooling, the useful life of the CPU will come to an end before it's functional life :P.

Yea I'm getting the Arctic Freezer 7 Pro (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6835186134), or planning on it anyways. My buddy told me a good OC for the E8500 would be around 3.5 GHz, so you guys think that I need a better fan?

I always take a look at frostytech to get general ideas about cooling/noise/price of coolers.

Overclocking a e8500 only to 3.5Ghz would be a waste. I have a e6750
@ 3.6ghz and If a e8500 isn't at least clocked at 4ghz I'd think you
weren't doing it any justice.

But, 3.5ghz would be a nice start because you haven't messed with it for several years. I just replaced my old Hyper TX2 with a Xigmatek HDT-S1283 and I like it much better.


I would get a better cooler to have room to increase speed so you don't degrade the cpu and keep the temperature down. Voltage and Heat are the main killers of cpu's.

Give praise to the e8500. Give it thanks. Overclock it to 4ghz minimum.
