E8600 4.4ghz
Asus P5E3 Premium
4 gigs, 2000 mhz DDR3

FYI, I am sort of a noob at OCing.

I am currently running at 440mhz FSB and 1.38 vcore and ram underclocked to 1760mhz.

I wanted to run the ram at 2000mhz in sync mode.

How doable is lowering the multiplier to 9 and raising FSB to 500mhz? How exactly does this affect the processor?

From some reviews I know this motherboard can do it, but I am not sure how much this will raise my MB temps and how the processor will do, ie how much will I need to raise vcore, etc.

I don't usually see people running with 500mhz FSB so wanted to know if anyone has any suggestions.

TIA

It's really more a question of your mobo's ability to overclock. If you have a x48 NB then it's very likely that you'll be able to hit 500fsb or higher no probs. If you have an x38, you may not get that high.

All in all, getting 500x9 stable Depends on 2 things:

1) cpu wall
2) FSB wall

1) if you have already gotten your cpu to run prime 95 stable at 4.5 ghz (450x10) then you won't have to worry about the cpu wall.

2) next is the fsb wall. You can test this by putting the cpu multi real low (say 6 or 7) and then pushing the fsb until you start getting instability.

if your cpu can do 4.5ghz and you get the fsb past 500mhz stable, you should have a good chance of success at 500x9

Thanks for the info. What I am also wondering is whether it is worth it. How much benefit would I gain running the ram at its default speed and in synchronous mode but at the same time possibly cutting motherboard lifespan.
