For any hard core gamers i suggest you skip this chip unless its a revision. for years we always use the lower chips, 560j instead of the 580 or the e6600 and q6600 inlieu of the x6800 or e6700.
but this time i think the high multiplier and bin sorting may pay off?
i have many issues going much beyond 4ghz with this chip - i suggest you stick with the q6600 at 3.6ghz every time or the newer E8500 with the lower fsb you may get 4.25-4.5ghz on air.
we have shipped a few systems with the e8400 and stability above 4ghz is a problem even though the temps are low. by my own rules i limit voltage to 1.46v at the Vdroop. you may 1.52v with nvidia or 1.475 with intel chipsets.
Since i was afk for 2 weeks my e8500 is in route

I think something is on the move.
For the past month e8400 has been out of stock everywhere and the price @$260.00. All of a sudden e8400 is back and @$200.00 range.
Are we going to see e8500 real soon? and now a clearing of e8400?
I say wait 30 days or so and see what happens.
I'll be waiting about a week, if only to see what AMD does and how it affects prices. One way or another, I am going to build...
Good thinking O wise one. It is never a good idea to buy chips after a recent drought, or if they're brand new. Remember that the retail price on the e8400 is ~$185. I am itching to get a new processor in my rig, so I can sell all my old stuff and get a new 22" Monitor . I have 4GB of XMS2 and a VX550 sitting in a new case just waiting.... it's so annoying (Mass mail-in-rebates, I got them early)
I'm really hoping AMD has some snazzy 65nm triple cores (or better quads) for us by May.... otherwise I'm just going to go for the e8400.
--------------- *computer down--faulty RAM* *Don't make fun of my 7900GS!!*
BFG rox.
I got mine. Not planning to overclock to 4 Ghz anyways.
Thanks for the heads up
IMHO a q9300 is better choice to future proof yourself, quad threading should start to show up much more, there are some minor compatiblity issues with the 8000's series make sure you do not run into one. temp monitor issues etc
E8400 is rock solidt at 3.6-3.8ghz for faint of heart 4.25ghz is pushing it for long term usage
