Hi, I just recently bought a q6600, and I'm running it with a Xigmatek HDT S1283. I'm kind of curious about the temperature behavior of the processor though, and want to get it sorted out before I attempt to overclock the thing. My temps at idle are around 34,27,32,34 which while not great isn't too bad (especially since the fan is apparently doing those temps at ~220 RPM).
However, when I run Prime 95, the temps go flying upwards until they top out at 60,49,50,60. The fan is only doing ~1100 RPM at this point, whereas it's rated to go up to 2200. Is this normal? And also, I'm wondering if I may not have the cooler mounted right, judging as two of the cores are ten degrees higher than the other two under load. It just seems other people are getting much, much lower load temperatures than I am.

Any help would be appreciated.

By the way, motherboard is a Gigabyte P35-DS3L.

Edit: GO stepping q6600 as well, so should run cool.

25-30 degrees is pretty normal. Mine jumps about 30, even on water. The difference in temps between cores is normal too. Your mount or surfaces might be a little uneven for 10 degrees though. I have about a 5 degree difference. I even lapped the cpu and heatsink but could not get the temps equal.

So if I fix the slightly uneven mounting problem, will this CPU be safe to overclock?

I've seen fans that are designed to spin up to max at 65C. It may not be getting hot enough to push it. Switching to a manual fan controller, or plugging into a normal fan port instead of cpu fan port would get it moving at full speed. Just make sure no software or the bios shuts down your other fans automatically.

It is high for a non oc machine. mine is at 2.8. The hottest core is 30 and the coolest is 24. It never goes over 56 after hours of stress test. Yes, i am with stock cooler. So, you might want to reapply the thermal paste. BTW, i have the same motherboard and processor as yours.
