I run a small Soho office and have purchased this Qnap TS-509 Pro Nas. It runs great as a file server and holds over 4 TB of data in over 500.000 files.

My biggest nightmare is of course that my house sets fire and I lose everything. So I would like to synchronise it every night with a device I set up in the external Datacenter where I have my own cabinet.

I have tried setting it up with these4 Lacie Bigger Disks of 2 TB each. However when I tried to synch with Ipswitch WS_FTP the connection is always lost somewhere during the night or the program crashes due to the big nr. of files, so very unreliable. The same happened when I used Second Copy.

I then tried the same thing with this"old" Eurostar NAS. Same problem.

I was told that I should use Rsync because that only transfers the differences. I checked the hardware and found out that only my current NAS at home (Qnap) runs Rsync while the Eurostor uses Nsync and the Lacies are running the windows OS.

I am by no means a real "techy", but I have friends who can help to reinstall tings or set it up the correct way. If only I knew what to do? My best guess would be to reinstall the 4 Lacies with Linux and put Rsync on them? or am I completely wrong.

What do you guys think?
Thanks a lot,
Peter

I use MS synctoy for copying lots of data because if it fails on one file, it just skips it and keeps going. It has settings for echo, sync, contribute. Not sure if it does over ftp though.

just so you are aware, dont use the current version 2.0 of synctoy for backing up to a nas system, i have read on their forums that people are seeing a lot of corruption of jpgs and avis,

direct to an external drive appears unaffected.

also i dont think synctoy has ftp capabilities, although if your machine can 'see' the destination folder via mapping it might work, but test it with v1.4 for now.

Thanks guys, but Synctoy is not really working for me. The lack of proper FTP support is too much of a hassle. I use this exclusively for FTP backup of a complete NAS.

Any other suggestions?
Thanks.
