my setup

athlon 3500 64 (single core) 939 chipset
2 gig pc3600 corsair (dual channel kit)
ATI x850xt
A8N32-SLI deluxe
530W psu

When i put my pc together it was sexy! time has taken its toll on it now.

i'm going to upgrade the whole thing when i have the cash but for the time being i was considering getting a 9600gt to breathe some life into my machine until i can afford to scrap it.

i dont understand the PCIE2 basically, will a 9600gt work in a PCIE slot? and will it work with a single core machine? (i cant find 2x 939 chips for love nor money) and is it even worth doing?

any help will be gratefully appreciated.

Will.

it will work in that slot... Though, it will be quite bottlenecked by your CPU...

i would say do it, and then swap it over when you can properly upgrade your system. just be sure you can run it on your PSU

Indeed CPU will make big bottleneck to your GPU but yeah it will work...

Why not get a Radeon HD3850 to tide you over? It's cheaper than a 9600GT.

Both will be bottlenecked by your CPU but should offer similar performance and be a big jump over your x850XT

The bottleneck that everyone is referring to won't be as bad as they say it is.  Will you get max performance out of the card?  No, but it will still kick ass.  It will be a problem when you are trying to play CPU intensive games.  But, for most games, you will be alright.  Would you be better with a new CPU too, yes.  But, don't let that stop you from upgrading your card.  It would breath new life into your system.  Obviously, you have been gaming with an X850 for a while, so anything would seem like a great increase in performance.  Which, in it's day was a superchamp.  But, it hasn't been for quite some time.

This is a good solution to consider if you plan to upgrade the system soon as it will give you a workable graphics solutionfor a new system, as would the 9600 you origonally mentioned.
A differant option if you intend to keep the upgrade to just the Graphics card and then replace the whole system would be to get a HD3650 which is half the price of the 3850 and wont be overkill for your system.

I'd go with the 9600Gt as well, you can use it in your next build and even SLI 2 of them which makes a GREAT setup.

the 9600 gt can be found for less than 150 dollars. It'd be a much better purchase for when you finally do switch it over to a new machine than the 3850.
