Possible Upgrade Advice

Hey Guys/Gals,

I have a dilemma, I currently have the below computer and I cant decide if I should wait for Nehalem or if I should upgrade now or cheaply upgrade now and save for Nehalem.

Old System

MB: Asus P4C800 Deluxe
CPU: 3.0 P4 1MB L2
Ram: 2 Gig of DDR 400
HD: WD 250 Sata
DVD Burner & DVD Rom old (ATA)
PS: 600 Watt with 35+ on 12V (I bought a X1950 Pro that Crapped out on me thats why I have a big PS)
VC: x850 Pro AGP 8X

I just bought my first house so I am a little money struck right now, so if i was to upgrade today I only want to spend around $350 and then save for Nehalem. But my current system is starting to show its age (usb ports power on and off all the time, I here the beeps from windows all the time) and it is really starting to bug me that I can not play some of the new games out since the x850 doesnt have SM3 (Bioshock right now).

If I upgraded with the below system do you think I would see decent improvements in Gaming and everyday stuff like CD/DVD converting/ripping. I will probably overclock the processor a little at a time until I get comfortable with OCing since I have never done it.

MB: GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L - $89 http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16813128059
CPU: Intel Pentium E2180 Allendale - $79 http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16819116052
Mem: CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800 - $34 AR http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16820145034
GPU: XFX GeForce 9600GT 512MB -$149 AR http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16814150277
Old Case
Old PS
Old DVD Burner
Old Hard Drive

Basically would it even be worth it to upgrade to the above system or should I just save up for a full upgrade with Quadcore, high-end board and what not.

Forgot to add I am using an older 19" LCD with a max Res of 1280 x 1024.

Also any possible alternitives to the above componets would be welcome.

Thanks in advance.

  1. Save for the full upgrade. IMO At least get a decent chip, MB, ram and card. If you got something like this:
    Your MB $90
    Your ram $34
    Q6600 GO $250
    8800 GT/GTS 512 $230
Total $600 or so that will get you in the game at your resolution. You would see dramatic improvement with those. Or do it in pieces if the moneys tight. Good Luck :)

The only problem with that is I am on an old Socket with an AGP slot so I cant put a LGA775 chip in it and I have DDR memory not DDR2 or 3
  3. With agp and old ram you kinda got to save up for them all at once then.
  4. So you think Upgrade to the above mentioned system is worth it even if i OC the processor?

Basically IMO save up. Others may see it different.
  6. What you picked does look good, should hold you until Nehalem comes out Late 4th qtr of 2008 or early 1st qtr of 2009.

Remember you will have to reformat your HDD, since it is a completely different system.
  7. Save for a full upgrade is my thought. Maybe not Nehalem, but just until you can do the whole kitten kabootal.
