i have the motorola dvr-4612 from comcast here in colorado (boulder
to be precise). suddenly some problems have started up, on both hd
and non hd channels. (i got the dvr late in 2004, when they first
started offering them.)

symptom 1) when i try to play some (not all) programs which have been
recorded on the dvr (total space used in the 40% range), when i click
on either restart of start from the beginning, i immediately am led to
the question whether to delete or not delete the program, but, if i
click on preserve it, and try again, i again am led to the same
question. i can't see the program in question, no matter what. this
happened on all of digital, hd, and analog channels.

symptom 2) when listing the recorded programs, the upper right corner
of the screen is supposed to preserve the program being watched before
clicking the list button. sometimes it just stays blank.

symptom 3) sometimes, on exiting from listing or watching recorded
programs, the screen stays blank. if i use the channel change button
either up or down, i get to the next channel, which shows up, and i
can return to where i was supposed to be and see the program on that
channel.

anyone else having problems? comcast has admitted that it is probably
a problem with the dvr, and that i should exchange it. unfortunately,
i have some things recorded on it which i don't yet want to lose. so
i am wondering if anyone has figured out how to get at the hard drive
in other ways than the use of the remote control.

I have had this happen twice. Both on CBS-HD. Same show both times.
If it was happening a lot, I'd be seriously annoyed. There is a LONG
thread on the Comcast 6412 box at avsforum.com. A few people have seen
this, but it isn't common.

Never heard of this one.

This is new too.

You need to call comcast and have them bring you a new box.

they agreed it was the box. they have a service center (not technical)
about 6 minutes from my home. i drove over, exhanged the box for a
new, 2005 model, and installed it, all in about an hour!
