I know that an e8400 would get you some better FPS in games (not enough to write home about IMHO) and it is less expensive, but in terms of playing a game, having fire fox open, and having a movie on in the background, do quads pull ahead? Or will quads only benefit in single apps that use 4 cores?
Its not only having 4 cores that makes them a better multitasker but also the higher L2 cache and the way its managed. 4 commands per cycle is always going to have more potential than 2 commands per cycle even if games don't make use of it right now. As always, no one is going to write software that doesn't have a wide enough platform to work on. Also the chipsets will need to be better developed to manage 8+ cores that will become mainstream in the next few years. Dual cpu's saw higher end apps going the multithreaded route and soon they'll work even better on multicore's. The way it's going with silicon and transistors, I can't see growth anytime soon without multipling the existing technology.
