How to apply TIM on unlapped C2Q using unlapped TRUE?

I am not going to OC hectically, I don't intend to lap anything, mostly I am not willing to screw the parts up (I know myself).

I have read a few guides on applying the TIM but they differ from the ball application on top of CPU to a line across the CPU.

Anyway I don't know which method to use. I plan to use the supplied Chill factor 2 although I have a tube of AS5 lying around but I read somewhere that the AS5 TIM needs to be re-applied every year or so, is this true? Does this apply to the CF2 paste as well?

I need some advice. Please let me know.

I will be using a Q6600 G0 and plan to run at about 3 or 3.2 Ghz.

I will be using a Zalman ZM-F3 120mm fan on 5V (at least before I OC) pushing air up thru the TRUE to my huge fan on top of the Antec900 case drawing it out.

I am thinking of following Thermalrights method of TIM application which dictates smearing a thin layer over both the CPU and the heatsink mating surfaces?

I was concerned over air pockets, but as I am not OC'ing to the extreme I don't even think I need to worry?

What do you guys think?

I think one post (with edits) is fine.

Some people swear by the ball, others by grains of rice. Me, I prefer the spread with a card method. Put a small amount on the CPU, then use an old credit card or a 3x5 card to spread it over the entire CPU paper thin. This is the part where its easy to mess up on, because a glop of TIM is just as bad as air. As long as its a thin coating, and its even over ALL the CPU area, you are gold.

another easy way is basically to rub the parts together after applying a ball and then remove the excess from the sides / reapply if needed.

As long as you end up with a thin layer evenly spread across the surface, you should be fine.

Thanks for the help 4745454b and antiacid. This basically confirms Thermalrights application method although they say coat both the CPU and heatsink with paste (very thin layer on both).

(It would be really cool if the components were see through eh? lol . then we could see exactly whats was going on with the spread of the TIM. Yes, I know this is impossible.)

If you install the heatsink completely (snap the retention clips) and then remove it carefully immediately, you can see how the TIM has spread... you can re-apply, but I just stick the thing back on, never had problems...

I coated both of the components with as little as possible smearing them with a thin plastic edge. Darn, the stuff was quite hard to smear.

I am running a Q6600 G0 at stock for now, Coretemp indictates that while under load/bit of browsing the Core temps are as follows:

32 33 30 35. I have only seen them going up to 45 and this on core 4. I have noticed this core always runs a couple of degrees hotter than the others.

That is an indication that thermal paste may not be evenly spread and/or that your cpu/heat sink are not well matched. Consider lapping both surfaces or reseating the heat sink to fix this issue.

BTW, thermal paste can take several days to really "break in". Check back in 150-200 hours to see if it changed.

I decided to oc to 3Ghz. FSb 333, RAM ratio 1:1(667Mhz), vCPU 1.25v.

Temps under load within 15 minutes in prime95 never went above 58 celcius for 2 cores, other two were about 2/3 degrees cooler.

This with unlapped anything, I smeared as little AS5 as possible over both the cpu and hsf.

As I do not perform any critical/crucial tasks and my PC has been stable in Prime95 for 15 minutes, i decided not to stress my system any further;-)

I think I am very happy with these temps as my ambient temp is about 26 degrees celcius atm.

My idle temps running wmp11 with visualization and browsing is 40.40.37.43(right now).

Sorry for double post but I am unable to edit my messages (never have been able to).

All my Antec900 fans are set to LOW!

Only my two Zalman ZM-F3 fans are set to Turbo in BIOS (Asus Q-fan) spinning @ 1330RPM. One Zalman on my TRUE facing upwards, other blowing towards my GPU/RAM.

If I had to increase my case fans RPM then obviously I would see lower temps.

Your temps seem a little bit too high for the voltage you had. When I had my Q6600 @ 2.7 ghz with 1.25V, my temps were in the high 40s/low 50s with Prime95 running for 6 hours. What kind of thermal paste/grease are you using. I have a cheap, bulky Asus cooler (dont even know the name lol) and my temps at 3.0 ghz with 1.272V is 58 C after 6 hours of Prime95.

I am using AS5 paste, ran Prime95 for 2,5 hours, no errors, I don't recall my temps going above 58/59 degrees. I think that because my case fan speeds are all set on low that my temps are slightly higher than they could be, but only by a tad?

I put my top 200mm fan on Med, it's still silent. You could bump the speed up on the CPU HS fan, thats where you get the most cooling. Run it up to max and try loading the CPU again, think you'll be suprised.

I will bump up the speed of the big boy to medium, unfortunately I think my CPU fan is already on max.

I opened my case, first time after putting it together. I noticed my big boy fan was set on medium already :(

I have set it to max, I have also dropped my CPU voltage by 0.002 volts (not much difference). I need to play with this more.

I think I need to measure my ambient temps because at the moment my cores are running at 30.30.27.33. Cool now as it is early morning, much cooler ambient.

let me find a thermometer! it is possible when I reached 58-59 degrees my ambient was 26+ degrees.
