I'm planning to upgrade my mobo/cpu/ram and was wondering whether my current PSU is good enough, or if I'll need to buy a new one.

My setup will be:
Asus P5k Premium
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 (I intend to overclock this)
OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-8000C5 1000MHz ReaperX
Geforce 8800GT
2xSATA drives
1x DVD-RW
+ a few USB devices, fans and all the usual gubbins

My current PSU is:
OCZ Modstream 450W (about 2 years old)

Any help/feedback would be appreciated.
Cheers :)

I personally would want to run that system on a 450W PSU. With the CPU stock, maybe, but the moment you start OCing, power usage is going to go right up.
I would want a decent quality 500W minimum. :)

nicht!
Stay in tier 2 or higher with a minimum of 550W

It is fine, unless you overclock, then you will be pushing it.  Buy the PC P&C 610w, its the absolute best PSU of the 550-700 watt range.

I run with a 500 watt antec earthwatts power supply with the settings in my quote below, overclocked to 3.2 gigs without any issues what so ever.

What's the 12v rail(s) rating on that powersupply. 450 watt is low, but it might be barely enough if 12v rail ampage is high enough.

Thanks for the feedback :)

It has 26A on the 12v rail.

Should be close (without overclock) we have to remember the thing is 24months old and will degrade overtime so it more than likley wont do 450W max anymore.

Give it a go if you short on cash, if you have some cash left grab one of the PSU's suggested above

26A on a single rail won't be good enough. Get a new psu. :p

Also, the closer to max wattage that you use it for the less efficient it becomes and the faster it's going to die. Quads are power hungry on the 12v rail, especially once overclocked, and they share it with the graphics card. I would definately upgrade to either the PC&P 610W, Antec Earthwatts 550W, or Corsair 520W.

I doubt that system will use more then 350-Watts if you don't overclock. This is definately not the place to post questions about Power supplies. Last time I posted something here about one (about a 9800GX2 running on a 550-Watt, and the minimum requirement for the GX2 was 580W), people were telling me that I needed at least 850-watts.... go to jonnyguru.com. They know tons more about PSUs then most everyone here does. The guy who runs the site works for a power supply company.

Im not doubting jonnyguru cause i have used the site more than once for PSU's, but i didnt see my suggestion as outrageous. Brand new that PSU would be enough but being 2 years old it may start to struggle, and i suggested that he just use it if he was short on dosh at current.
