It would be interesting to see how this is worded, considering that the general idea of plug in modular cabling is covered by prior art, this type of cabling has been used in the avionics industry for decades, long before Ultra was even in existence.

I highly doubt they will make money off of some of those companies. The reason being that a few of them don't even make their PSUs, so they haven't really done anything wrong themselves (Corsair being an example since Seasonic actually builds their modular units).

Interesting that the number of the patent that they claim has been violated has not been listed. This almost looks more like a shakedown, hoping that the other companies will settle claims out of court rather than spend all the time, money, and effort to go into court and battle it out.

Maybe if Ultra used better PSUs they wouldn't need the money from the lawsuit: http://hardocp.com/article.html?ar [...] RodXNpYXN0

Wow that review was something else.  It deserves more attention.  The updates at the end were especially alarming!

Yeah, there's a reason that some of their PSUs are rated as tier 5. It all makes me wonder how they ended up with a model that was tier 2. Did someone else make the good PSU and Ultra stuck their name on it?

Edit: I just read the updates at the end of the hardop article and it looks like Ultra was flat out lying about that PSU. Too bad that the people who bought them don't get together and file a class action lawsuit against Ultra.

Thanks for the link I was too lazy to use Google. Partly in protest to the clowns that start threads like this without providing a link to the article they just read.

It certainly looks like they are going to need the money, based on the Ultra X2 Extreme Review.

It is a shakedown.  In order to win a patent/trademark case, an owner has to prove that they've defended the patent/trademark.  You can't just allow your patented technology to be used for a decade and then suddenly decide that you want royalties.  You have to pursue those royalties from the beginning.

However, if they ask for a reasonable out of court settlement they will get it from many companies since they have legal funds/insurance to cover such things.

It won't change anything for us.

Like most any other PSU company, Ultra doesn't "make" anything.  They commission OEM factories to make products for them.  Sometimes different OEM's are used to satisfy different price points.  The X2 in the review is made by Wintech.  The X3 is made by Andyson.  Two completely different OEM's with different build quality.  Another example of OEM's of varying quality would be an FSP built Antec Basiq vs. an Enhance built Antec TruePower Quattro.  The two are VERY different from one another and neither are "made" by Antec.

Looks like we have been honored with the presence of the PSU guru himself :)
