building a new computer for rendering...quad core processor, plenty of ram, mild overclock. Would like to use 8GB DDR2 800 (or higher). My number one right now is the asus rampage, but have read several forum entries where people have had trouble with memory beyond 4gb. Do I have to underclock the memory to get to 8GB or is there another board i should check out?

one of the motherboards I am looking at is the ga-x48-ds4, but I cannot find any reviews of it....opinions on how it stacks up to the asus rampage (i always default to asus...have had a few with mild problems...but they are strong boards)?

It worked well for me. There are user reviews on Newegg via the same link.
Everyone says Asus has better quality, but that just seem strange, considering ASUSTek is based in Taiwan, with factories in mainland China. Made in China isn't usually associated with high quality. Not to say that it's bad though. I'm sure it's fine.

Interesting thought. I overclock the 8 gigs of RAM in 'my configuration' on my ASUS Maximus Formula X38 and run it at PC8500 1050MHz. The ASUS X38/48 MB's (and I'm sure other Mfg.'s as well) utalize 8 gigs of RAM just fine at advertised speeds. You will have to adjust RAM and chipset voltages as well as RAM timings. I had to bump up my NB to gain complete stability with my system. No reason to be forced to underclock 8 gigs just because it's 8 gigs with VISTA 64 . That idea has to have come from a throwback to Windows XP and the limitations of DDR RAM. Maybe that was NF3 or early NF4. Why do XP users get all worked up about their 64 bit processors anyway?
