I recently purchased a Seagate 250GB 7200 Barracuda Hard Disc and then I read on the net that these drives made in Thailand are crashing at a rate of 40% and the situation is almost close to a product recall due to faulty firmware, so I'm planning to return it.

Can you please recommend any other good brand of reliable Hard Disc preferably in the 250GB category or even 160 GB ?

Is Western Digital a better alternative? OR shall I get a Seagate 160GB IDE?

Not "crashing", they are locking-up due to a (now fixed) firmware error, nothing wrong with them once updated (which you can do yourself).
This is now quite old news, only drives which have been in storage for a while will have the problem, have you checked your serial number (via Seagate web site) or firmware version to see if your drive has the problem?

Agree with above post; the Seagate drives had a firmware problem which is now fixed.
