Hi,
I'm in the market for my first HDTV and I'm pretty sure I want a DLP type of
set. In general I liked the Samsung DLPs I saw at Best Buy but I saw a JVC
D-ILA that I liked even more. It's a bit cheaper and I like the stand and
dimensions ( it will fit perfectly in a corner on my current TV stand ). Is
the JVC D-ILA as good as the Samsung DLP? It seems like the same type of
technology to me, they both looked great.
I'm currently using DirectTV and am very happy with it so I will upgrade to
their HDTV service.
I've only been to Sam's Club and Best Buy so far. I plan on checking Circuit
City and Tweeter. Any other places I should check?
Any advice is appreciated since I'm pretty much a novice.
One more thing, what about a DVR? Direct TV's HD DVR/Receiver is down to
$650. Should I bite or wait for the price to drop further? The regular
receiver is $300 anyways so maybe I should go for the DVR. Never had DVR but
I think I might like it.

The D-ILA technology is solid state, like LCD, rather than having moving
mirrors like DLP. That gives me more confidence in it. Also, it generates
the colours with 3 chips rather than a spinning wheel, which sounds more
reliable. That said, DLP is a slightly more mature technology and there are
many happy owners with two or more years experience under their belts.
My own impression from seeing the JVC ILAs in stores is they are top notch
for HD images, as good as the best plasmas and better than DLP or LCD, but
less impressive (although still OK) on standard signals. Being new, there
have been some reliability problems, but not too bad.
I'll probably be buying this fall and my two top choices are the 56 inch JVC
or 55 inch Sony A20, both new models arriving during the summer.
The best place to learn about this is CNET or Howitworks, or if you want to
lose yourself in reading, the AVS Forum.

I own the 61" JVC HD-ILA 61Z786 and I agree with the above posts, the
PQ in HD is GREAT, however, the PQ in SD is okay and as far as analog,
well sometimes watchable...I watch mostly HD.

I see some complaints on the AVS Forum about excessive fan noise. How do you
find yours?

How is it on progressive scan DV and Sat broadcasts?
My satellite receiver provides progressive scan (480p) on all SD content.
The only 480i I have is OTA analog (one channel that I never watch) and a
quick'n dirty Svideo pipe from my computer (which is backed up by a
component 1080i pipe if I want to throw some switches and mess with the
software).

I have been using the hid def Tivo for several months. It is well worth the
price, even when it cost more. Don't wait. Even if you eventually save a
couple of hundred dollars, you will have to watch inferior TV until that
time, and it is just not worth doing that. You will enjoy this unit, no
doubt about it.

I work in a small electronics store and we all find the JVC to have the
best picture. Sony and Hitachi will be using the same technology in
there new sets. The new JVC look great.
