how does running a recovery on old drive compare to a new hard drive?

Hello and welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums.

It all depends on why you want recovery. If there are any doubts about the drive that runs your operating system, bin it and buy a new one. If it was only a matter of choice, run the recovery, keep an eye on thinngs for a few weeks then consider a new, larger disk and clone the whole system on to that.
