I have just installed a new WD EIDE 500GB harddrive and also a ultra ATA IDE controller card and it shows in the device management in vista under mass storage controller, but it will not initialize, it says "device not ready". Now i also used WD lifgaurd software and ran it through and it says the device is formatted and ready, but no change. Now i only have the one Hard drive hooked into the card using the cable provided and jumpers in the default position, now i have no idea what the issue could be.

You need a driver to make that controller work, they often come with a floppy or cd containing the driver plus additional software. You can also download them from their website (Promise/Silicon Image/JMicron). If you're booting from a harddrive on the chipset controller instead of your add-on controller, you should not need any additional drivers.
