ok when i click on an avi movie, my computer locks up instantly and i have to ctrl alt delete and close the explorer down. Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing it?

*btw the error report doesnt tell me anything

*and it does it 100% of the time. If i just click on it one single time it freezes.

Have you installed any new programs or updated any programs since this started?

It has to be a software conflict of some sort. Ive had that to happen before and it was DVD43. When I tried to start a certain game it would give me the BSOD everytime. If I remembered to close the program it wouldnt happen. You could try to shut down some programs and see if it still happens.

Once you find the program responsible it will stop happening, Im sure of it.

You could also try to find a different program to play your avi file with. This may be a work around if you cant figure out which software is the problem...

no no its not the program which is playing it that is causing the problem. The computer literally locks up if i simply left click 1 single time on any avi file.

uninstall and reinstall the program

no program is causing it because if i simply 'touch' the file my pc locks up

It's codecs conflict. Did you install multiple large packs?

im not sure what you mean. this happens on avi file movies.

btw this is what the error report says:

"Problem caused by XviD

This problem was caused by XviD.

Well, this is because windows was trying to create thumbnail for files you active with your mouse. Creating thumbnail process require loading a DirectShow filter to decode the video which locks up your explorer.exe. To be sure nothing is wrong with your computer try this first: download this http://ffdshow.faireal.net/mirror/mplayer/mplayer2008.02.06.7z and this http://ffdshow.faireal.net/mirror/pthreadGC2.dll.7z extract both of them to your Windows\System32 folder or any place that is in your user/system environment PATH variable, you can put the content at the same place as your avi files, too. After that open Comand prompt window, navigate to your avi file folder and type in "mplayer file.avi" with file.avi is an avi file you have that can cause the lock up. If it plays without problem, then you don't have any other problems beside the filter you install to play MPEG4 ASP file (the video codec you normally see in avi container). You can now uninstall the xvid codec or any decoding software and install ffdshow which can be get from here http://downloads.sourceforge.net/ffdshow-tryout/ffdshow_rev1928_20080410_xxl.exe?modtime=1207839380&big_mirror=0. This might be hard for new user to set up though so if you want an easier approach try this filter package http://www.cccp-project.net/ it can decode nearly anything inside .mkv .ogm .avi .mp4. Don't worry about the cccp name, it's a bad joke to be honest.

I sound's like your one of your codecs is corrupted. I would just download and install a codec pack like cccp. The link can be found here.

http://www.cccp-project.net/

I have that installed on my computer and it plays everything from AVIs to MP4s. Try it out. The newest update to this pack should update all your current codecs which should fix your problem.

If you're talking about ffdshow, no. Not sure about others.

 Funny thing is that CCCP is how USSR comes out in Crylic (Russian). May not have spyware but it may have a hacker waiting :kaola:
