More Information

I have the EX38-DS4 mobo with an E-8500 3.1 G.  At start up in the bios PC health status the CPU temp is at 92 degrees right off the bat. The stock cooler starts off at 2k rpm`s and after 1 minute it ramps up to 2500 at a temp of 95-96 deg.   I have recently built this rig and am waiting on windows vista ult64 and Gigabyte PSU23 cpu cooler.  Is the cpu temp normal with the stock cooler at this point?

System-

Gigabyte EX38-DS4
Intel E8500 3.1G
WD Raptor 150gb 10k
OCZ 4GB ddr2 1200
Sapphire HD3870
OCZ GameXtreme 1010W PSU
Sony 20x DVD

Any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.  Also, this is my 2nd build so to much info is never enough :sol:

Thanks in advance!

If the temperatures are in °F it's quite OK.

If they are in °C your chip is overheating by a dreadful amount.
You probably didn't mount the CPU cooler correctly.

I don't recommend running the PC until you remount the cooler properly.
Make sure all 4 pushpins have gone through the motherboard holes and that the thermal paste under the cooler is present.

It was loose, good call.  Im waiting to put the gigabyte cooler on as well.  Should have it tomorrow.  Thanks for the info.

SOme e8400 and e8500 have defective temperature sensors. You should put your finger to it and feel the burn. :na:

^At 90°C ?
I was wrong about you dagger. You are an evil one. :D

@CobraT
That's strange choice of cooler. I've never even heard about it.
Is it any good?

I highly doubt it's actually 90+C. The PC would freeze and crush before it reaches that high. :p

And Gigabyte's selection of cpu coolers are pretty underwhelming.

^True. But bare metal at 60°C burns like hell anyway. :ouch:
I think you could fry an egg on it but it would take forever. :D

It looks like something out of starwars (must be the mirror finish).
- points for bling. Would fit perfectly in a P182 SE (mirror finish) fridge edition.

I went with that cooler due to my undying loyalty to Gigabyte, and I think it looks cool.  Anyway, it did shut down once.  I restarted it and was able to get to the bios to check the temps, figuring with the fail safe shut down it could be possible that it could be getting to hot for some reason and shutting down.  With the stock cooler in the way I couldnt feel any excessive heat.  I was able to check the memory, it wasnt hot at all.  Would the defetive temp sensor still cause it to shut down?

^If like you said the HSF was not firmly attached to the CPU those temperatures were likely close to accurate. With heat sensors become less accurate and tend to show higher temperatures (don't let this fool you).
Make no mistake, your chip was OVERHEATING BADLY (you may have even damaged it by restarting the system after it shutdown).

All this aside the failsafe works regardless of false readings. Once the case temperature of the chip reaches the shutdown threshold the system shuts down. If it's faulty it may have happend later increasing the chance of damage. If it's not faulty it may have prevented you from ending up with a $200 keychain.

Be careful next time and double check everything is sitting tight before powering up. Good luck.

Yes, seems I dodged a bullet....All is well!!  The gigabyte cooler is working awsome.  System is running cool at 35 deg C and the CPU is running 27 deg C with gigabytes easy tune overclocked to 3.5 .

Just as a side note.  I have the Raidmax Smilodon case.  The Gigabyte PSU23 cpu cooler is mammoth!!  You cant install the cooler while the mobo side of the case is open, it does not clear the PSU.  Other than that its doing great.

Thanks for your help and suggestions!!

Does Scythe Ninja Plus fit into this mobo?

Well, I was lucky today as I found  the mobo and the cooler in a shop . They fit each other very well. Let me hope anyone looking for the answer would find it here...

@ CobraT

I just built a system with a GA-EX38-DS4 and E7200.

Would you recomend using gigabyte's  easy tune?

Did you use the CIA or individual tweaks?

Is easy tune a software tune only or is it actually changing the bios?

Your temps, 27c cpu and 35c system. How did you get those temps, bios, hwmonitor, everest, etc? I have noticed my bios, everest and hwmonitor all have different names for the temps and all different temps. My bios says exactly the same as yours 27c cpu and 35c system, but the other software has totally different reads.
