I've got an QX9650 coming as a work perk and I'm looking for advice on motherboards with SLI or Crossfire capability. I'm kind of partial to Nvidia cards but I'll go ATI/Crossfire if their mobe/GPU combination is better.

With QX9650's unlocked multiplier, any half decent motherboard should do. But you should wait until end of this month, when 4870 comes out, to decide between sli and crossfire. There is an early benchmark, but it might be fake.

Even if it's not as good, it should push down prices of everything else. You win by waiting no matter what.

Well that is the big question huh???

Most people favor one or the other. Myself, I like the support of Nvidia products.

Well if you have the money (which you probably do being as you bought a $1000 dollar processor) why not go 790i (xfx or EVGA) tri sli ultras or 9800GTXs and DDR3. THE WORKS

They're
equal. It all depends on how the cards themselves perform. Both
x38/48(crossfire) and 790i(sli) run at full 16x PCIE2.0 while in
crossfire/sli.

That's certainly nice if money isn't a consideration. :p

Well, money is a consideration as usual. I'm on a $1500 budget. The good news is the processor doesn't have to fit in that budget. It's free from work. The bad news is I need EVERYTHING. Case, monitor, keyboard, drives....all in that $1500.

With the games I run (various flight sims) I leaning toward 780i with a single 8800GTS card for now and getting a second card later. That way I can spend more now for a decent monitor and other parts.

Yeah I would go with a XFX 780i SLI mobo if you are going to do extreme overclocking. Other than that any half decent mobo would fit your requirements. The 8800GTS 512Mb GPU is a very good card and should fit your needs perfectly. You could also go for either a 8800GT OR 9600GT these are both very good card and will treat you well they are around 40% cheaper.
